Sometimes my inner June Cleaver gets a wee bit busy…(sometimes is an understatement)
On those days…nothing is better in my world than a “Set it and Forget it” dessert
Inspired by a recipe that I found that utilized cherry pie filling and cake mix…I decided to play
Here’s what I did…………..
Ingredients:
7 medium-sized granny smith apples
3/4 cup dark brown sugar ( I like the molasses flavor it adds)
1/4 cup flour
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon fresh grated nutmeg (you can used ground if ya want)
1 box of golden butter or yellow cake mix
1/4 cup butter softened
3/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon cardamom
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
Crisco (for greasing crock pot)
Directions:
Peel, core, and slice all of the apples and place them in a large bowl.
In a separate bowl, mix together the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Pour the sugar mixture over the apples and toss them until evenly coated.
Grease the bottom and sides of your crock pot with crisco and dump in the apples, smoothing out to make an even layer across the bottom.
In, yet another bowl (this is when I want to hire a dishwasher), combine the dry cake mix, cloves, cardamom, ginger, and the softened butter and work together using your fingers until crumbly.
Dump the mixture over the apples and then top with the chopped nuts.
With the lid on, bake on LOW for 3-4 hours…..watching to make sure it doesn’t get too dark around the edges, which can leave a bitter taste.
I wish I had ice cream tonight…it would have been heavenly. Maybe I should have added it to the ingredient list above….You DEFINITELY should get some!
Regardless of the lack of ice cream, it was FANTASTICALLY APPLICIOUS and a great way to end the day!
If I sit here very quietly…I believe Ican hear the crock pot saying sweet nothings to me. If you’re FORCED to eat seconds the calories don’t count right???
Signing Off,
Modern Mrs. Cleaver

Definitely on the menu for this weekend! Thinking Vanilla ice cream…
Affirmative on the ice cream! I wish I would have had some when I made mine. I’m going to play around with the fruits and spices next time and see what kind of interesting flavors I can make.
i love everything apple! yummm! do you have any recipes for a tasty apple cider?
I too LOVE apples…unfortunately, living in Alaska they are expensive to say the least. When I find a good sale I grab them
Apple Cider sounds heavenly…time to go through my recipes!
that’s so funny to hear you say that apples are expensive! i buy apples because they are the cheapest at the store!
I can’t even fathom cheap produce….so I just THINK about all the wonderful things I could bake WITH them!
